Train Service

The North Borneo Railway was established in 1896 by the British North Borneo Company. It was built for the main purpose of transporting commodities from the interior to the port in Kota Kinabalu during the British occupation. The railway line connects Kota Kinabalu with Tenom and several other towns in between, and it is the only railway system operating in East Malaysia. Today the railway is known as Sabah State Railway, and it provides daily services for commuters, travelers, as well as for cargo transportation. A separate company operates the leisure tour also called the North Borneo Railway, which caters mainly for tourists. The train station and terminal is located in Tanjung Aru.

The Tour
• Runs two weekly return departures from Kota Kinabalu / Papar, year round
• Lasting approximately 4 hours, passengers experience the lush landscape of the coastal and rural regions of Sabah. A typical colonial lunch will be served on board.
• The trip start at 10.00 am until 1.45 pm every Monday, Wednesday and Saturday.

Taxi Service

Kota Kinabalu Sabah

Taxis are plentiful and run at all hours, you can flag them down anywhere it is legal for them to stop. They also congregate around busy areas like hotels, shopping centers and the harbor area. They are usually using Protons sedans with sufficient luggage space. They used to be white on red (older ones still are), but you see ever more solid red one, blue ones and even yellow ones.
Legally, taxis can only carry 4 passengers (1 in front and 3 in the back) and are fined if they are caught carrying more, so don't bother begging for your party of 5 to be taken in one taxi (small children are the exception). They are all air conditioned. Between midnight and 6am, taxis are more expensive and you can usually expect to pay the meter (or normal price) plus 50%.
